Caveat Emptor on "New Experience" + in-line AV receivers
Dec 7, 2017 at 1:45:33 PM (Updated: Dec 7, 2017 at 1:53:57 PM)  |  #1

Having recently added a mini 4K to my Tivo Bolt environment, in order to use the VOX functionality I needed to upgrade from software v20.x to v21.x on the head-end Bolt unit. The incumbent environment (Tivo/Yamaha AV receiver/Sharp LCD display) which worked flawlessly under v20 now only displays at 480p. As the display resolution screen does not include a "save" option, there is no logistical way to hard-code a video resolution, even though the EDID of the upstream information properly lists the available resolutions as 1080p/1080i/720p/480p. As "auto" only includes a 480p option, all video displays at 480p @ 3x4. Welcome back to 2005.

This is frustrating, as the boot sequence properly displays at 720P @ 16x9, and under software v20.x, the system worked flawlessly at the preferred 1080P. Clearly there is something in the running software that is no longer supported, and this is a customer Satisfaction issue.

This undocumented feature with the "new experience" upgrade is sub par, as nowhere on Tivo's website does it list this caveat when opting in for the upgrade. Given no downgrade option exists that will also save your recordings, this is an epic FAIL Frown on Tivo's part. If the Tivo Bolt is directly attached to the display without the AV receiver inline, it works fine at 1080P. However, this would require a significant rewiring and reprogramming/retraining of the video environment as *it worked fine* under v20.x code so clearly the hardware should be able to support this configuration. The moral of this experience is ...

If you want to use VOX functionality (which requires v21 code on your Bolt), you will need to surrender having a 3rd party receiver in the HDMI path or live with a video feed of 480P. If you want to use your 1080P video feed through a 3rd party AV receiver, you cannot also enable VOX on any device as  Mini's required synched versions of software to the associated upstream DVR. At this time VOX functionality with 3rd party receivers is mutually exclusive unless you want to go blind watching 480p video. Or you can surrender the VOX functionality ONLY IF you downgrade your Mini 4K and never opt for the v21.x upgrade.

This has been confirmed with Tivo's support group with no known workaround.
