Discussion forum post DWL-G120
Mar 22, 2005 At beginning of post row.
I purchased and installed a Tivo-compatible wireless adapter last weekend. The DWL-G120 is connected via the supplied USB cable to the back of Tivo. The power light lights up occasionally, but my server doe snot recognize it.
Tivo does not see any network.
The Tivo compatibility list shows version B2. How do I know what version I have? D-Link.com does not indicate any sort of version for DWL-G120.

How can I get connected?

Do you have software version 7.1 on your Tivo?
If not, you will need to request it and get it downloaded before the DWL-G120 will work. As far as versioning goes, you might find it on the FCC label or under a barcode, that is how it is done with earlier D-Link adapters. Finally if you do have SW 7.1, you might want to try it on a computer to verify it is good.

Thanks CM,

I have found the Version B1 on the FCC label. Too bad that was not available before I purchased it.

SW 7.1 is installed on my Tivo. Is there a minimum amount of space that the adaptor has to be away from the TV and Tivo? It was a few inches from Tivo. Does it have to be feet away?

The adaptor power light goes on every once in awhile, but have never seen the link light go on. Is it truly a compatibility issue or do I have a bad adaptor?

Sorry to ramble on, just trying to get this thing working and disconnect the phone line.

Locating the adapter is a matter of trial and error, it is an antenna, put it where it gets a good clean signal, if that happens to be on top of or behind your Tivo, so much the better. If it happens to need to be further away to find the signal or avoide reflections that lower signal quality (but not strength), then again, so be it.
Since you have the B1 and it is not supported, that would explain why it doesn't work. I suggest you print out the list and take it shopping, I hear adapters can be found at office supply stores and Wal-Marts. Radio shack may be a good place to look also, their stuff moves pretty slowly.

Good luck

i made the same mistake - got the DWL-G120 version B1 instead of
version B2. On my series 2 tivo i can get this wireless adaptor to work for short periods of time, but eventually the tivo will stop detecting the wireless network. restarting the tivo gets it going again, but sooner or later we're un-networked. guess this means another best buy run...

Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought I made sure I read the adapter list carefully, and did not see any mention of B1 or any other version not being compatible?
The only note I read was that TiVo software 7.1 is required to use the DWL-G120.

Take a look at the list at http://www.tivo.com/adapters and you'll see the B2 is now clearly noted.

This wasn't always the case -- about two months ago when the G120 first appeared there was no version specification, but after issues were found with the B1 version (reboots and dropped connections), the B2 version was found to be more reliable and the web page was updated accordingly.

It's not on the "Full" list. Go check.

You're right and thanks for spotting it. I'll pass this along.

It is worth noting that the main page at http://www.tivo.com/adapters does show it (and that's the URL in the documentation) but if someone had printed out the "All Wireless Adapters" and taken it with them, they wouldn't see the version designation on the G120

I just spent two + hours trying to get this DWL-G120 to work, following the instructions to the letter. I mean it's not rocket science, especially after doing this stuff for the last 15 years or so. I mean I was going nuts. And then I read this thread.

Now I'm just absolutely livid, because I too printed out a so called complete list of wired and wireless adapters. My list DOES NOT show a B1 or B2 version. If they can't even get their you know what together on a lousy list...I'm done...I'm done. I've got better things to do.

I can't believe it, what a bone head mistake.

For what it's worth, the B1 adapter does appear to work but it causes issues such as unexpected dropped connections and rebooting of the DVR.

I sincerely appreciate the quick reply, and I did in fact experience all of those issues. Seriously, with all those issues does it really work? I don't think so!

If the TiVo team knew of these issues, and considered that a working adapter...well enough said.

Close, but no banana. Thanks anyways.

I just configured a D-Link DI-624 802.11g AirPlus Xtreme G wireless router to my RCN cable modem hoping to connect my Series 2 Pioneer TiVo/DVD player to a wireless adapter in order to facilitate my TiVo connection. I, too got the D-Link DWL-G120 Wireless 802.11g USB Adapter and it wasn't until I got it that I was able to tell it was a B1 instead of a B2. I installed it on my TiVo and it was not sensed at all.

As for downloading the 7.1 software, since my TiVo service number begins with 275, the software is not available till "later this year".

I've read of other people getting other adapters to work, that are not D-Link. Does the adaptor have to be D-link since I have a D-link router? Any other suggestions?

I update my Tivo with the 7.1 software upgrade and that did not help DWL-G120 connectivity issue. At least in my area, the B2 version is a very hard itm to find.

In most cases, the store-person will come back with some snarky comment about Tivo using old adapters.

I am going wired.
