Please help! TiVo HD is freezing during recorded playback
Apr 13, 2008 at 8:33:13 AM  |  #1
In the past few weeks, my 3-month old TiVo HD is freezing during recorded playback. The video image freezes on the screen (sometimes the audio will continue for a couple of seconds) and I have to restart the unit. During the image freeze, I can fast forward and rewind - but as soon as I click "Play" the image is frozen at that spot, too. I go back to TiVo Central, select another program, but the same image freeze happens to that program. The only solution that works (and only them, temporarily) is to restart (power cycle) the unit. Then it works again . . . but only until . . . it happens again.

Any thoughts?

I had the same problem..Froze up on "Almost there...". I took the cover off and found a great deal of accumulated dust in the unit and used my compressor to blow off the dust, disconnected and reconnected the hard drive connections after blowing out every nook & cranny I could find. Then I replaced the cover and found that I corrected the problem. I think that the dust was causing some static electricity that interfered with the electronics in the unit... hope this helps you?

I am having this exact problem on my brand new tivo hd. I just had comcast install the cable card friday and I'm just now trying to watch the first shows I've recorded. As you stated... I too can fast forwad and rewind, but as soon as I press play the video/audio play a few seconds and then freeze. This is so annoying. I've never had this problem with any of the other TIVO's I've owned. I was so glad to get rid of the Comcast DVR with it's awful tvio service pack.... and now this. Sigh.

This started happening to me last week? I got my Tivo HD before christmas 2007.

The only resolution is to restart the Tivo.

I have the same symptoms above for recorded content, but even live tv has the same issue? Was there an update recently that screwed things up?

Same thing just started happening with my HD Tivo too - just over the last few weeks. Live TV or Recorded shows just stop. Restart is the only remedy. I've had this tivo since 11/07. It also seems to be happening on a more frequent basis.

This has also started happening to my TiVo HD in the last few weeks both on Live shows and recording. The signal can come either from the cable or from the ant and no difference, it still freezes.

Again the only solution is a restart.

I fixed my by opening the case and blowing out the entire unit with compressed air. I had a good deal of dust on the circut board which, I believe, conducted some static electricity and was shorting out the board. hope this helps you>>>>>>>>>>

The answer to your problem
Dust my man.. dust! Dust collects on the circut board, carries static electricity and causes a problem with the circuty... If not corrected, as more dust collects, the problem gets worse. Remove the cover and blow out the entire unit with compressed air. This worked for me.....

Re: The answer to your problem
fpj800, a number of people have reported this issue in the last few weeks, starting with the 9.3a update. It started this weekend for me. You can stop imagining hordes of demonic dust incapacitating Tivos across the US.

Re: Demonic dust
In my case it was a horde of demonic dust incapacitating my Tivo! I had a carpet of dust in my Tivo. And, after cleaning almost four weeks ago, my Tivo is working great! No more freezing! Period! Dust does carry static electricity. Maybe in your case it is the update, but in mine, and I believe in others, it may very well be DUST.

We're seeing this at our house. It began occurring about a week after the system restarted, probably due to the software update.

I'm on the phone with support now and they are looking into it. Thus far they did confirm that the time frame for the restart was consistent with a software update. I'll post further information as I get it. Hopefully they can back out the software.

Re: TiVo HD is freezing during recorded playback
That may be the case with Tivo "HD", but I do not have an HD model. Dust was my problem.

Re: TiVo HD is freezing during recorded playback
It's a software problem. Tivo is aware of it, but has no estimated fix time. I was told it could take a few days or up to a month to fix. Call them and let them know you also have the problem.

We're having the exact same problem. Starting Yesterday we can't watch any of the shows we have recorded (or are recording). It must be the software version because mine is the same as everyone else's in this topic.

Can anyone from TiVo respond to this and give some sort of status and estimate when we can start using our TiVo again? It's unusable right now.
