Installation error with Vista: "Access Denied"
Aug 14, 2007 at 4:18:38 PM  |  #1
I installed version 2.5 and when I attempt to start the program, I get an error window that says "Unable to begin Tivo Desktop. Access is denied." Any help for this one, please?

I'm getting the same message, I even tried running the Fix on the Tivo website and I'm still getting access denied.

Has anyone gotten a solution to this figured out? I'm having the same issue with Tivo Desktop on Vista. I had called Tivo but they said that it would take 24 hours after the Tivo had been updated for Tivo Desktop to work. It's been 48 hours and still no luck.

I'm having the same problem on both of my new Vista machines. One is Vista Home Premium 32-bit, and the other is Vista Ultimate 64-bit. So what gives? I see three posts but no replies from TiVo or anyone else yet. Any solutions forthcoming?

This is a peer support forum. You are waiting for someone who knows and understands Vista go provide an answer.

In the meantime you can look at the TiVo Desktop Installation Troubleshooting support article:

I did speak with Tivo about this awhile back. They indicated that they're aware of the issue and that it does have something to do with the security on Vista. We tried several options to get Desktop through, but nothing worked. So the only downside is that until MS or Tivo changes something to make the two compatible, Tivo Desktop cannot read photo files and music from our PCs.

I haven't found this to be a huge issue for me, but eventually it'd be nice to see this corrected.

This is not a compatibility problem nor a problem with Vista security.

The problem is that the path to the Tivo Recordings folder is not set in the windows registry during installation. When Tivo Desktop tries to load and has no directory to work from you get an Access Denied error because there is no access to the Tivo directory.

To resolve problem, open REGEDIT and go to

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-193448489-611782067-3019253846-1000\Software\TiVo\Desktop\Modules\TivoNowPlaying\Config

Or something similar, your numbers in the key may be slightly different.

Then set the LocalRootPath value to the directory where you keep your Tivo recordings.

Then close REGEDIT and try restarting your Tivo Server. Mine came right up.
