Tivo Desktop 2.5.1 Plus and Server Will Not Start
Jan 12, 2008 at 5:42:23 PM  |  #1
After months of working perfectly - once I shut off UAC - suddenly my Tivo Server would not start. Got the old "Server did not respond in a reasonable time." message. Then the Desktop software itself wouldn't start. It would begin to load and then just hang, all the while eating up memory and cpu.

I tried uninstalling and upgrading to 2.5.1. The uninstall and install worked fine, but the same problem persists. I have Windows Vista Premium, no problems with the Firewall and haven't installed any new programs aside from whatever updates Vista installs itself.

It's very odd, not to mention frustrating. One day fine, the next day the Server is my CPU's worst nightmare.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help.

I am having the same issue. Tivo server has ran fine for months. Now all of a sudden it will not start. Rebooted, reinstalled, still nothing. Would be nice to see a response here from Tivo..............

My OS is win xp pro.

Wonder if some windows update broke the service that is used to run the tivo server.

When you look in the task manager, on the processes tab, do you see it running there?

If you pause your antivirus software and then try launching TiVo Desktop, does it start working? If you pause other security software you are running, does that help?

yes i have paused my antivirus software (avast) i see the Tivoserver.exe process in the task manager. the mem usage for the service is all over the place, constantly changing. and still the service will not start. it is eating 48-50% of my CPU trying to run. after failing to start in a timely manner i now have many instances in the task manager of TivoServer.exe trying to start.

Having more than one could certainly be a problem all by itself. I suggest you reboot the computer and try again. With only one copy running, what do you see?

I'm having a very similar problem. TiVo Desktop 2.5.1, Win XP Pro.

I have the box checked to automatically start the server, but it does not start.

Opened desktop, tried Server menu/Restart TiVo Server, and got a pop-up error box, The system cannot find the file specified.

I have reinstalled TiVo desktop several times. The server starts after the reinstall, but the problem seems to recur after I start the computer the next time.

I have finally gotten mad enough to uninstall tivo desktop, run the tivo desktop cleaner and re-install. Still does not work. (2.5.1)

I obtained version 2.4a and it is working without a problem. Hate that i can not watch divx movies now.

Obviously there is a serious flaw with this latest version and XP.

Tivo should also have previous versions available on the site to use. This last release is a huge fail IMO. I even found a version 2.5 for download on the net and that one is a fail also.

Any chance that this may be an issue with DIVX and the 2.5 versions? I am trying to remember if the problems started after i updated my divx pro to version 6.8.......

I see alot of other users here and on other forums saying the tivoserver.exe will not start. Would be nice to know that they at least acknowledge there is a problem.

FYI.... I had the same problem. Here is what I did to fix the problem. I stopped all services. I uninstalled Tivo. I ran the TivoCleaner. Then I re-installed. Only this time I clicked OFF publish photos and music and I clicked OFF Start Tivo Destop after installation. The install went fine and when it was done, I started Tivo Desktop. Success.

Go figure....

I need to add that when I started the desktop and point the library to my old library, the server again locked up.

I have the same problem which just started as well after months of working fine. Running Windows Vista. Tivo Server will not start and hangs using 50% CPU. Tivo Desktop starts after several minutes. I have uninstalled the desktop, used Tivo cleanup, and resinstalled - does not fix the problem. Stopping anti-virus does not help. Any ideas?

Try deleting the files in TiVo Desktop's cache folder.

What services do you want to turn off and why? I looked at that support article and I don't see where it tells you to do anything like that. It does say that the cleaner tool will stop running software, is that what you are referring to? If so, just run the cleaner.
