It said it would have limited functionality.
“You will receive enough program information to give you a chance to try the TiVo
service. If you do not activate within about a week of completing Guided Setup, your
recorder will have limited functionality. The recorder was designed to be used exclusively
with the TiVo service. The TiVo service is required for proper operation of the recorder.
No functionality is represented, warranted, or should be expected without a subscription to
the TiVo service.”
I want to use it just to record when I hit the Record button or program it to record at a time on a channel say channel 2 at 10pm.

It will not do those things without a subscription. All it can do is play live TV with a 30 minute buffer and give you fast forward, pause, rewind and other trick play features.
There are older TiVo DVRs with built in DVD burners that you could find on eBay that have "TiVo Basic" functionality. Those can do what you want, but current models don't provide that capability.

Tivo (the company) has an arrogant attitude towards it's customers. Tivo (the company) believes that too much freedom is bad. Tivo (the company) believes that they own the box even if you buy it. Tivo (the company) shouldn't be trusted too far.
